The Halloween Candy Buyback buys candy from children after Halloween. We get candy off of the streets and send it in care packages to troops overseas. The troops get a brightened day and often share the candy with locals in a show of trust, sometimes acquiring key intel.

The Halloween Candy Buy Back (HCBB) program was started with the goal of getting some of the candy “off the streets.” In 2005, I held my first HCBB. The next year, I went to my colleagues and asked if they’d be interested in supporting this endeavor by simply paying $1 for every pound of candy a child brought into their respective offices followed by sending the goodies to the troops overseas. The local responses were fabulous and in the following years – the national response overwhelmed me as well!  Hundreds of local news stories led to the event getting featured by Diane Sawyer on ABC News. and most recently on CNN

I have really enjoyed watching this event grow and realizing all it has done for children, dental practices, and the troops overseas who are serving in harm's way. In addition to all of the good we are doing, we are also having lots of fun! We have partnered with Operation Gratitude by shipping all the candy donated along with toothbrushes so troops abroad can receive goodies in their Operation Gratitude care packages. Yes! Dental offices nationwide pay the kids for the candy and in return the dentists mail off the collection to Operation Gratitude and they sort all the goodies, pack the boxes and ship those boxes to our troops abroad serving the country. More than 130 tons of candy has been collected, over the years, by collaborating with dental offices nationwide and working with Operation Gratitude. December 7, 2013; we were able to help Operation Gratitude celebrate shipping off the 1,000,000th package from Van Nuys, CA. Please check out the pictures and videos under the Media section to see the highlights from offices around the nation plus the 1,000,000th package celebration.

Your participation is essential because the children can’t drive just yet. In all seriousness, your support shows your family the

  1. importance of dental hygiene,
  2. great feeling of helping others and
  3. earning a few dollars is always a special feeling.

These are just a few of the possible take away lessons you and your family can have when participating in your local Halloween Candy Buyback. More importantly, you and your family will have a ton of fun hanging out at the dentist/orthodontist office hosting the Halloween Candy Buyback.

Operation Gratitude:

As long as you will be sending all collected candy, items and letters to Operation Gratitude, you are authorized to use the Operation Gratitude name, logo, photos, flyers and other materials in connection with your collection efforts.

To request Flyers and Posters about Operation Gratitude, please email . Check out our fun Halloween Candy buyback Video too! If you'd like standard language to use about Operation Gratitude, let them know and they will email different length versions.  They can also send the Operation Gratitude logo for your use.

In addition, you are welcome to use photos and troop letters from their Facebook page as long as attribution is given to Operation Gratitude.

I especially encourage your office and your patients to write letters/cards to the troops that can be included with your candy in the packages. Operation Gratitude welcomes donations of dental hygiene products such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss--perhaps your suppliers/reps would be willing to participate as well!

Shipping details are listed on the FAQ page and don’t forget to complete and include a donation form in every box mailed to Operation Gratitude.
